Hand Weaving on Warp-Weighted Loom
pine, clay weights, wool warp

This warp-weighted loom is a composite piece based on looms in the Nationalmuseet, Copenhagen and the Norsk Folkemuseum, Bygdoy. This style of loom was common throughout Northern Europe at the time of the Conquest and remained in use in parts of Scandinavia until the last century. The work in progress is a 2/1 twill - a weaving pattern that creates an obvious diagonal effect on the cloth. This particular twill is well-suited to the warp-weighted loom and creates a 2-sided fabric. The "weft face" at the front principally shows home-dyed handspun wool. The "warp face" at the back shows the machine-spun gray weft fibres. (Loom constructed by David Cox.)
