'Kitchen Knife 2' - 1996 pattern welded with a carbon steel core |
|
the Cutting Edge Darrell Markewitz has had a life long interest in functional cutting edges. Although not exclusively a knifemaker, past work has ranged from working reproductions of historic tools, dependable combat blades, through to distinctive custom knives. A special concentration has been the Northern European Pattern Welding method. Unique are objects made of ancient type Bloomery Iron. |

Any blade must first
be an effective cutting edge. Darrell has experience working with
forged metals extending back to the late 1970's. His
personal work is strongly influenced by both Norse and
Celtic artifacts, and also the metalworking techniques
of ancient, historic and modern bladesmithing. Past work has ranged from small carving knives through to full sized Great Swords. The focus has always remained on the blade as cutting tool, forging methods remaining more important than 'knife as jewelery' designs. In the past, almost all blades were created as unique custom orders for individual clients. Recently, Darrell prefers following his own creative spark, offering up individual objects as he creates them. |
