CanIRON VII - FErgus

Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex
Fergus, Ontario
Thursday July 28 - Monday August 1, 2011

the GALLERY at CanIRON 8

We would like to encourage all attendees to submit blacksmith related works (of all kinds) for the Gallery!
As much as possible, we would like to feature “new” projects in the gallery, specifically those created since the last CanIron (August 2009.)
There will be lots of space in the gallery space for older works, works in progress, even your experimental techniques.

Special Gallery Submissions : 'Joined by Joints'

A special theme for the CanIRON 8 Gallery is “Joined by Joints”. Here being defined as " works employing mechanical joins which are not welded, brazed or soldered" . (Although it certainly may be argued that forge welding is a method of traditional joinery, these other listed methods will not be assessed inside this additional category.) For works intended for this special category ONLY - use mortise & tenon, rivets and other non-welded joints.
We want to display a diverse group of works, 'Jointed by Joints' is just a “themed” prize category inside the larger pool of works included in our Gallery. Please remember that ALL your past works are welcome in the Gallery!

Bring your very BEST work! :
Over and above this theme category there will also be recognition for “best use of materials”, “best in show” & “judges choice” for which ALL newer works will be considered. You will be asked for the date of creation of your submissions, and only works created after August 2009 will be eligible for the AWARD categories.
Judges will be chosen from the demonstrators and (of course) the judges' own work is excluded from these awards.

General Information :
- All works must be moveable by one or two people! No lift trucks will be allowed in the space.
- All works must fit through a standard door.
- We will have plinths and tables available for display, as well as places for hanging. Some lighting will be available.
- If there are any special requirements for display or hanging they must be provided by the artist, and ideally you should contact Kelly Probyn-Smith beforehand to check whether there will be a difficulty.
- All works for the gallery will be photographed and cataloged for archive purposes. It is possible that we will feature some works on the website, and perhaps create a book from the works submitted to the gallery.
- Artists will be asked to fill in an information card about their works for the display tags.
- Anything being submitted will be required to both be registered into, and signed out from, the Gallery. To speed the removal process, a simple “sign out” sheet will be created, so all you will have to do is initial beside your work on their way out the door.
- If anyone is shipping their work because they are flying in you are responsible for its arrival at the gallery as well as for crating and making all shipping arrangements.
- Pickup from the gallery will have an “at the latest” time (5 pm Sunday July 31). For any works sold from the Gallery, it must be made clear to the purchaser that they are responsible for pickup no later than this time.

Gallery Pre-Registration : Those who know that they are planning to bring something to the Gallery can help to keep the on-site workload down by forwarding your name and any other information you have about the piece you are thinking of bringing.

Promote Your Work! : There will be an area for business cards or small flyers to advertise BLACKSMITHING WORK ONLY. There will also be a small area for both fellow smiths and the general public to 'Meet the Artist' - and potentially discuss projects and/or sales. This will be implemented via a sign up sheet, during the public viewing hours (Friday & Saturday - 1:30 to 4:30 PM)

Gallery Sales? : Sales of objects you display in the Gallery is certainly encouraged!
- Gallery Staff will not be making direct sales transactions.
- Should a member of the public be interested in contacting you or purchasing a piece from the Gallery there will be forms for them to leave you their information. Any information collected will be placed in an envelope with your name on it and can be picked up from Gallery Staff at the end of the conference when you pick up your work.
- We ask for a 5% commission, to be donated toward the next CanIron, if there are sales derived directily from your exhibiting in the Gallery - and we do this on a trust basis.

Save Time at Gallery Registration! : Fill out this Registration Card - available as a PDF download.
