CONSUMPTION / SEQUENCE rates (at m/kg) are from first ore to last ore additions

Date: May 30, 2009
Experiment: 40 / D18
Location: Wareham ON
Team: Ken Cook, Neil Peterson, Richard Schwitzer
Furnace: Short Shaft
solid clay
incontinent (top extraction)
Size: 20 cm x 65 - 62 H
Source: based on archaeology from L'Anse aux Meadows NL
Tuyere: standard ceramic tube
Placement: natural set base, about 17 cm
3 cm proud
set at 23 degrees down
Bellows: electric blower
Air: 650 LPM
Charcoal: 38 + kg broken hardwood
Consumption: about 2 kg charcoal every 16 minutes
15.1 m/kg
Ore: DARC Dirt 2 (black iron oxide analog)
18 kg (damp) @ 61 % Fe
Sequence: ore added about every 16 minutes
charges range from 1 to 2 kg each
8.4 m/kg
Duration: about 4 1/2 hours (not including preheat)
Result: 4.9 kg bloom - dense soft iron
Yield: 27 %
Notes: - classic planno-convex shaped bloom

solid clay slabs
incontinent (top extraction)
Size: 20 cm x 68 H
Source: based on archaeology from L'Anse aux Meadows NL
Tuyere: standard ceramic tube
Placement: natural set base, about 14 cm
5 cm proud
set at 22 degrees down
Bellows: electric blower plus mechanical box bellows system
Air: approximately 900 LPM
Charcoal: 43 + kg broken hardwood
Consumption: about 2 kg charcoal every 16 minutes
6.3 m/kg
Ore: mixture of DD 1 / DD2 / Haematite
20.7 kg total @ 61 % Fe
Sequence: ore added about every 12 minutes
charges range from 1 to 2 kg each
8.5 m/kg
Duration: about 4 3/4 hours (not including preheat)
Result: 5.6 kg bloom - dense soft iron
Yield: 27%
Notes: - classic planno-convex shaped bloom

Location: Wareham ON
Team: Ken Cook, Sam Falezone, Neil Peterson
plus bellows operators - Dave Cox, Marcus Burnham, Richard Schwitzer
Furnace: Boxed Short Shaft
clay and sand mix
tap arch (top extraction)
Size: 20 cm x 68 H
Source: based on archaeology from L'Anse aux Meadows NL
Tuyere: standard ceramic tube
Placement: natural set base, about 15 cm
5 cm proud
set at 22.5 degrees down
Bellows: Norse style double bag (smelting)
delivery estimated at 700 LPM (?)
Charcoal: 28 + kg (?) broken hardwood
Consumption: about 2 kg charcoal every 15 minutes
8.0 m/kg
Ore: DD 2 analog - 18 kg @ 61 % Fe
Sequence: data not clear (counted as 'scoops')
